The fatalities marked a significant escalation following months of strikes against American forces across the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. The injured, mostly affected by traumatic brain injuries, are undergoing thorough evaluations for follow-on care. President Biden, responding to the attacks, assured that the U.S. “shall respond,” emphasizing accountability for those responsible.

Response from President Biden and Defense Secretary Austin

In a written statement, President Biden affirmed that the U.S. would hold the perpetrators accountable “at a time and in a manner (of) our choosing.” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin echoed this commitment, stating that the U.S. would take all necessary actions to defend its troops, interests, and the nation. The identities of the service members are being withheld in accordance with Defense Department policy until 24 hours after notifying their next of kin.
