LOS ANGELES, July 4, 2025, CD PROJEKT RED and Studio Trigger have officially confirmed the development of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to the hit 2022 Netflix anime.
The announcement was made during a special panel at Anime Expo 2025, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, drawing huge excitement from fans and media alike.
The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became a global sensation upon release, praised for its emotional storytelling, distinct visual style, and successful expansion of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
Now, nearly three years later, the franchise is returning with a completely new story set once again in the dystopian streets of Night City.
Unlike the first season, which followed the rise and fall of protagonist David Martinez, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be a standalone sequel. It will feature a fresh cast of characters and explore entirely new narrative territory.
Showrunner Bartosz Sztybor, who returns to write and lead the project, described the new season as even more emotionally intense than the original.
Sztybor emphasized that while the setting remains the same, the thematic focus of the new season will shift toward redemption and revenge. He stated, “The first Edgerunners was tragic. This one is even more sad, darker, more bloody, more raw.”
Studio Trigger is once again handling animation duties, ensuring the distinctive, high-energy style that helped define the original. However, there will be a change in the director’s chair.
Hiroyuki Imaishi, director of the first season, will pass the torch to Kai Ikarashi, who previously directed Episode 6 of the original season, titled “Girl on Fire.” That episode was noted for its bold visuals and psychological intensity, qualities that will now shape the entire sequel.
Joining Ikarashi are screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka, known for his work on Gurren Lagann and Promare, and character designer Kanno Ichigo. This creative trio is expected to push the limits of what fans can expect from an anime set in the Cyberpunk universe.
During the Anime Expo panel, attendees were treated to a closed-door screening of a short teaser, offering a glimpse into the sequel’s visual direction and tone. While the footage has not yet been released to the public, it reportedly hinted at a grittier, more violent take on the Night City setting, consistent with the creators’ stated goals for the sequel.
A teaser was accompanied by the reveal of a new logo and official key art for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, confirming that the sequel is currently in active development.
Both CD PROJEKT RED and Studio Trigger reiterated their dedication to growing the Cyberpunk universe through bold, story-driven projects across multiple formats, with anime continuing to play a central role.
Although a specific release date has not been announced, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will debut exclusively on Netflix. The project is currently in production, with further updates expected in the coming months.
Given the success and critical acclaim of the first season, anticipation is high for what promises to be a darker and even more ambitious chapter in the Cyberpunk universe.
The original series not only revitalized interest in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game but also demonstrated the power of animation to explore mature themes through immersive worldbuilding. With a new creative team and a bold narrative direction, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is poised to deepen the legacy of its predecessor.
Fans of the franchise, and anime audiences in general, now eagerly await their return to Night City.
