Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, head coach of Colorado, announced that surgeons removed his bladder after they diagnosed him with an aggressive bladder cancer. His oncologist now considers him cured, and he plans to lead the Buffaloes this upcoming season.
Sanders publicly addressed his health battle during a press conference on July 28, accompanied by his full medical team from UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urologic oncology, explained that surgeons performed a robot-assisted laparoscopic cystectomy and reconstructed a new bladder using part of Sanders’s intestine.
At age 57, Sanders avoided chemotherapy or radiation and instead opted for surgery to maintain his health and presence for his family and team. He told reporters he chose surgery over extended treatment because he didn’t “want to be running down to the hospital once a week”.
anders lost about 25 pounds during recovery. Showing his usual candor, he joked that he now relies on adult diapers, saying, “I count on Depends, if you know what I mean.” I cannot control my bladder.”
He pledged he won’t let embarrassment stop him from speaking openly and helping others facing similar challenges.
At the event, Sanders highlighted early detection’s vital role in his outcome. His cancer surfaced via a routine CT scan tied to past blood clot issues. Kukreja confirmed that no cancer had spread beyond the bladder, allowing her to use the word “cure” with confidence.
Despite his health ordeal, Sanders remains upbeat and committed. Entering his third season at Colorado, he confirmed that he will continue coaching the Buffaloes. He even quipped that he might have a portable toilet on the sideline to accommodate his new reality.
Sanders, who will turn 58 next month, addressed more than just his own journey he positioned his ordeal as a message of strength. He emphasized that others should not be ashamed to speak out or seek treatment early.
The Buffaloes kickoff against Georgia Tech on August 29 at Folsom Field, marking the first season Sanders won’t coach one of his sons. He extended his contract through 2029, highlighting his commitment to the team’s long-term success.
