The UK Foreign Office confirmed on 28 July 2025 that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises UK nationals to avoid all travel to eight countries due to severe security, legal or health risks. These countries are Afghanistan, Belarus, Haiti, Iran, Russia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The FCDO assesses each of these destinations as extremely dangerous because of ongoing conflicts, political unrest, armed violence and threats of arbitrary detention.
The FCDO flags Afghanistan for its volatile security conditions, where ongoing conflict and terrorism make travel unsafe. It warns that Belarus poses a high risk of arrest or detention for UK citizens. In Haiti, the FCDO cites widespread violence, kidnappings and a lack of effective governance. It identifies Iran as one of the riskiest countries for British and dual nationals due to the danger of wrongful detention. The FCDO places Russia under its “do not travel” alert, citing threats linked to the invasion of Ukraine. It also highlights South Sudan’s frequent armed clashes, banditry and widespread crime. In Syria, the prolonged civil war has created unpredictable and dangerous conditions. The FCDO reports that Yemen remains highly unstable, facing ongoing conflict and a severe humanitarian crisis.
From the 226 countries and territories the FCDO monitors, it issues full or partial travel warnings for 73 of them. However, only these eight countries currently fall under a complete “do not travel” warning. The FCDO emphasizes that travel insurance usually becomes invalid if travellers ignore its guidance. Additionally, consular support in these areas is often extremely limited or unavailable.
Travel experts and government officials urge UK citizens to check the FCDO’s official website before planning trips to ensure their destinations do not have active travel warnings. They warn that ignoring official travel guidance can put individuals at significant personal risk and expose them to serious financial or legal problems, especially during crises or travel disruptions abroad. The FCDO routinely reviews and revises its travel advice. Its latest warnings reflect growing global instability caused by military conflicts, political emergencies, and humanitarian crises. To stay safe and compliant, travellers must plan responsibly and consult official sources before departure.
