Eric Dane died Thursday at age 53 after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a diagnosis he made public in April 2025. His family said he passed Thursday afternoon after months of illness that remained largely private outside a short period of public updates.
In their statement, Eric Dane’s family said he was with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, their daughters Billie and Georgia and close friends in his final days. They also said he used his platform to support ALS awareness and research and they asked for privacy as they grieve.
After sharing his diagnosis, Eric Dane spoke about the condition affecting his body unevenly, describing severe loss of function on his right side while his left side continued to work. He said at the time he was continuing to fight.
Eric Dane’s career included long-running television work, including his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, which he played from 2006 to 2012 before returning briefly in 2021. He also appeared as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria and was expected to return, with season 3 scheduled to premiere on HBO on April 12, 2026. Tributes from fellow actors and public figures were also described following the announcement.
