Adult Swim viewers are being told the Smiling Friends ending is planned, not a gag and it will come after the show’s third season. In a video message shared on the network’s social channels in February 2026, creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack said the decision was theirs and stressed it was not a joke.
Hadel said the series would stop after Season 3, while Cusack described reaching a point where the team felt the current run could be enough. Both framed the move as a response to creative burnout after years of development, arguing that extending the show could risk its standard.
Key details from the announcement include:
- The show had previously been renewed for additional seasons, but the creators still chose to end it.
- Season 3 was released in October 2025 and concluded with an episode that aired on November 30, 2025.
- Two additional Season 3 episodes are scheduled to premiere on April 12, 2026.
The creators also left room for possible future specials if circumstances change, but for now the Smiling Friends ending remains tied to the completed Season 3 order.
