July 1, 2025, Detroit, In an electric vehicle market increasingly led by affordability and range, General Motors has found a breakout success with one standout model: the Chevy Equinox EV. Dubbed “America’s most affordable 315+‑mile‑range EV,” the Equinox introduced this year has rapidly emerged as the brand’s sales juggernaut.
- Q2 explosion: Thanks largely to the Equinox EV, Chevrolet’s electric sales in Q2 soared 134%, with GM delivering 46,280 EVs across its namesakes, a 111% year-over-year jump.
- Sales by the numbers: Chevy moved 17,420 Equinox EVs, 6,549 Blazer EVs, and 3,056 Silverado EVs in the quarter. As of June 30, cumulative sales include 27,749 Equinox units, 12,736 Blazer EVs, and 5,439 Silverado EVs.
GM’s rapid growth has positioned it as the second-largest electric vehicle brand in the U.S., narrowing the gap with Tesla. Chevrolet’s EV sales have climbed 134% in the first half of the year, reinforcing the brand’s upward trajectory. Starting at around $33,600, the Equinox EV hits a key sweet spot in the market, delivering strong value at an accessible price point.
- Key features: Up to 319-mile range, 150 kW DC fast charging (adding ~77 miles in 10 minutes), 11.5 kW Level 2 charging, and an available Super Cruise hands-free driving system.
- Trim lineup: Available in LT and RS trims; AWD variants deliver ~285-mile range from dual-motor setups.
- Efficiency and savings: With around 31 kWh per 100 miles (≈19.2 kWh/100 km), an EPA-rated 109 MPGe, and eligibility for a $7,500 federal tax credit, the Equinox EV emerges as a budget-conscious EV solution.
The Equinox is only part of GM’s EV offensive:
- Cross-brand gains: Cadillac’s EVs, including the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ, contributed to 12 consecutive quarters of sales growth, with nearly 25% of Cadillac deliveries now electric.
- GMC making strides: The Sierra EV, relaunched for 2026, saw over 1,500 sales after a $27,000 price cut compared to the 2025 model. GMC’s Hummer EV also saw Q2 sales surge to 4,508 units, a 54% increase.
Challenges ahead
Despite this success, GM must navigate ongoing headwinds:
- Policy and subsidies: Potential rollback of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit looms, and proposals for stricter tariffs on vehicles made in Mexico could impact pricing.
- Competition jumps: Rivals are similarly stepping up with affordable, high-range EVs, and GM continues racing toward scale-driven profitability.
