On Monday, August 5, Michael Soroka made his highly anticipated debut for the Chicago Cubs against the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs had recently brought him in from the Washington Nationals to strengthen their struggling pitching rotation.
Soroka, who turned 28 on the same day, started strong. In the first inning, he struck out three batters and allowed just one walk. However, things took a turn in the second inning when he gave up a solo home run to Tyler Stephenson. Even though he finished the inning, discomfort began to show.
Before he could pitch the third inning, Soroka walked over to the dugout and discussed his condition with manager Craig Counsell and the team’s medical staff. Soon after, he left the game. The Cubs later said he experienced right shoulder discomfort, although they haven’t yet revealed how serious the issue is.
As a result, Ben Brown replaced Soroka on the mound at the start of the third inning.
This injury could not have come at a worse time for the Cubs. They are already dealing with injuries to key pitchers like Jameson Taillon and Javier Assad, and Soroka was expected to fill a critical gap. Now, they must wait for updates on his health while rethinking their rotation plan.
Before joining the Cubs, Soroka had a 3–8 win-loss record and a 4.86 ERA across 17 starts for the Nationals. The Cubs had traded Christian Franklin and Ronny Cruz, both minor leaguers, to get him.
For now, fans and team officials can only hope that the injury is minor and that Soroka returns soon to make a full impact.
