Bobby J. Brown, the Baltimore-born actor who portrayed Officer Bobby Brown across multiple episodes of HBO’s acclaimed drama “The Wire,” died February 24, 2026, at age 62. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation, with the manner classified as accidental.
Brown died after entering a barn on his Maryland property to jump-start a vehicle. He called out to a family member for a fire extinguisher, but the structure – measuring 50 feet by 100 feet – was already fully engulfed by the time relatives arrived. Emergency dispatch audio confirmed he was trapped inside. His wife sustained severe burns attempting to reach him.
His daughter said he did not suffer from the burns and that the family believes smoke inhalation took his life. She also noted he was a devout Jehovah’s Witness and that funeral arrangements were underway.
Before acting, Brown competed as an amateur boxer, earning five Golden Glove Championships. He later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Beyond his role on “The Wire,” his credits included “Law & Order: SVU” and “We Own This City.” His agent described him as a dedicated actor and a joy to work with.
