Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has confirmed that he will leave the club this summer after 10 remarkable years. The South Korean star, who played a key role in helping the team win its first trophy in 17 years, is now in advanced talks with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.
Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, he has become one of the most admired players in the Premier League. Over the years, he scored 173 goals in 454 appearances for Spurs and earned a reputation for his speed, skill, and consistency.
Recently, Son captained Tottenham to victory against Manchester United in the Europa League final. That win gave the club its first major title since 2008. Despite having a contract that runs until 2026, Son now believes it is time for a change. Speaking during a press conference in Seoul, he described the decision as the most difficult of his career. He said he arrived in North London as a young boy who couldn’t speak English and is now leaving as a proud and grown man.
Tottenham are currently on their pre-season tour in South Korea. Son is expected to lead the team against Newcastle in a friendly on Sunday. If the LAFC deal goes through quickly, that game could be his final appearance for the club, and it would take place in front of his home crowd.
Manager Thomas Frank, who recently replaced Ange Postecoglou, praised Son’s legacy at the club. He called him a true Spurs legend and one of the greatest players to feature in the Premier League. According to Frank, if Sunday is indeed Son’s final match, there could be no better place to say goodbye.
Son has achieved many milestones during his time at Spurs. He made 333 Premier League appearances and scored 127 goals in the competition. That puts him level with Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and ahead of big names like Ian Wright and Steven Gerrard. He also provided 101 assists across all competitions and holds the club record for most Premier League assists with 71.
His partnership with Harry Kane made history. Together, they combined for a record 47 Premier League goals. In the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons alone, they linked up 21 times. Son also became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot, sharing it with Mohamed Salah in 2021–22.
Reflecting on his departure, Son said he needs a new challenge. Ten years is a long time, and he feels a different environment could help him grow further. Although his exit marks the end of an era for Tottenham, his achievements will continue to inspire fans and future players alike.
