Sha’Carri Richardson Arrested at Seattle Airport

U.S. track and field star Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested at Seattle Tacoma International Airport for alleged involvement in a domestic dispute with fellow sprinter Christian Coleman. The 25 year old Olympic gold medalist was taken into custody on July 27 and charged with fourth degree domestic violence assault.

According to reports from the Port of Seattle Police, surveillance footage appeared to show Richardson forcibly removing a backpack from Coleman, pushing him into a column, and throwing headphones at him multiple times. Despite the altercation, Coleman refused to press charges and did not wish to be considered a victim. Richardson was booked into SCORE jail in Des Moines, Washington, around 6:54 p.m. and released by court order the next day at 1:13 p.m., after spending nearly 19 hours in custody. This incident occurred just days before the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Richardson had qualified for the semi-finals in the women’s 100 m with a time of 11.07 seconds, but she later withdrew from both the 100 m semi finals and the 200 m event. Her automatic qualification for the upcoming World Championships as the reigning 100 m champion may have influenced her decision.

USA Track & Field acknowledged awareness of the arrest but declined to comment further. Richardson remains one of the most high profile sprinters in the world. She won the 100 m gold at the 2023 World Championships and was part of the 4×100 m relay team that won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
